Treatments of decay
The aim of the conservative dentistry is not only the treatment of decays but also their interception and prevention.
The treatment consists in eliminating the decay and conserving as much as possible the natural tooth structure (dentin and enamel). The cavity is afterward filled up by composite material in the same shade of the teeth.
Depending the cavity size and its shape, filling can be chosen depending the direct or indirect technique used:
Direct technique: simple, esthetic and economic. The treatment is performed in one appointment. The cavity is filled with composite material (composite is a resin based material reinforced with ceramic particles) and light cured with a blue light.
Indirect technique: chosen when size and cavity shape are inappropriate for a direct technique. This filling is performed in two appointments. On the first appointment the tooth is prepared for an impression used for the reconstruction of the missing part of the tooth by the laboratory. On the second appointment the prosthetic piece called “inlay” or “onlay” which could be in composite resin or ceramic is fixed in the cavity by bonding. The benefit of this technique is it’s strength and it’s high esthetic output.
Veneer is a thin layer of restorative material made in ceramic or composite resin covering the surface of the teeth. They are highly esthetic and indicated for shape, shade and in some case teeth position correction. This treatment uses an indirect technique and needs at least three appointments.
- on the first appointment the dentist analyses and selects the technique that will better correspond to smile and aesthetic desires.
- on the second appointment the tooth is prepared by taking out a small amount of tooth enamel to provide accommodation for veneers. During this appointment an impression is done and a temporary veneer is fixed over the tooth.
- on the third appointment the everlasting version crafted in laboratory is bonded to the tooth.
Veneers are highly esthetic and their prognosis depends on maintaining perfect hygiene conditions.
